Monte Lupone's path
Monte Lupone is the protagonist of the many summer excursions that have had this 1378 m high mountain as their destination for years. From Largo Secondo Mariani square, continue towards Via di Cori, at the second crossroads there is an indication for Monte Lupone which can be reached by passing through Monte Pratiglio (953m) and crossing centuries-old beech woods and white stony ground. At the top the view really leaves you breathless.
This easy route, within everyone's reach, unfolds around the historic center of Rocca Massima. You go along the via delle Croci until you get to the Parco della Memoria e della Speranza where some very interesting cultural activities are organized in the summer (Poetry Evening and Marco del Ferraro Memorial). Leaving the park you follow the whole via di Cori and from the war memorial onwards all via Vittorio Emanuele III with a splendid view of the Pontine plain to reach Belvedere Umberto Cianfoni. We set off on a path that can be reached thanks to ladders and we reach the launching platform of Flying In The Sky, the longest aerial rope in Europe and the fastest in the world with its record of 172 km per hour (www.flyinginthesky.it ). The graceful little church of Carmine, nicknamed by the Rocchiggiani little church of the Madonnella, acts as a romantic backdrop. This church built in 1606, cared for by the Carmine brotherhood, is dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio. Continue on via del Carmine and as you see the first fortification tower continue on via Fuori le Mura until you get to the first Postierla, a narrow access door that was also used as an exit or emergency entrance in case of attack or siege . It allows the passage of one person at a time and it is here that you enter the historic center. We visit the main church San Michele Arcangelo, the oldest, built in the thirteenth century together with the village. It has six side altars under small chapels and a main altar on the back wall. Taking via della Marina to piazza della Corte you arrive in front of the ancient Palazzo Del Principe. From via San Michele you reach through a gallery built with old wooden beams up to the alley of Ciambella and from here you enter via del Municipio. Passing through Porta Doria, on which it is possible to admire the Rocca Massima coat of arms, we head towards the Museum for the cave of the Golden Angel, reproduction of a post-war house complete with furnishings of the dining area and bedroom with annexes departments containing war material from the first and second world wars, tools from the shoemaker's, carpenter, barber's shop and tools for agricultural work.
Oasis of Ninfa
One of the most beautiful gardens in Europe, the garden of Ninfa, in the province of Latina, at the foot of the Lepini mountains, is a place of rare beauty. The Gardens of Ninfa, grown on the ruins of an ancient city, extend over an area of about 8 hectares and owe their name to the Roman era temple dedicated to the Nymphs Naiads, (its symbol if we can say so) which is located at center of an islet. In the garden of Ninfa there are the remains of Santa Maria Maggiore, a 900 church complete with frescoes, a transparent river crossed by picturesque bridges and plants and flowers from all over the world. The garden, not too far from Rocca Massima, can be visited and open to the public only on certain occasions, generally from April to October.
Ancient Norba Archaeological Park
The ancient city of Norba imposes itself in the landscape for the spectacular position that dominates the Pontine Plain from the top of the Lepini Mountains, with an overhang of about 500m. Access to the Archaeological Park takes place today through Porta Maggiore, the most monumental compared to the other three doors: Porta Ninfina, Porta Serrone di Bove and Porta Signina. The urban area shows an orthogonal structure, created by road axes that cross each other creating a series of blocks intended for residential use. The streets are all paved with white limestone pavements, flanked by sidewalks on both sides and with underlying sewers still functioning today. Two main axes excavated to date with the relative crosspieces, overlooked by the houses (domus) and shops (tabernae).
